Unity College

Dining hall area at Unity College. The Breathing Buildings team developed the ventilation strategy and undertook calculations to determine the ventilation area required at high level

The Breathing Buildings team were involved in the design of Unity College, and also supplied e-stack equipment to some of the spaces.  In addition to installing single e-stack units to a number of music and drama rooms, we also developed a strategy of Talking Stacks for the new 300 person hall. This new innovation included four e-stack controlled stacks which communicate and provide controlled, naturally pre-heated mixing ventilation in cold winter conditions, effectively recycling the internal heat gains through natural pre-heating of the ventilation air.

Monitoring of the new development, which was carried out with support of The Carbon Trust, suggests that the system is maintaining low CO2 levels in the space, and also that the pre-heating through mixing is helping prevent cold draughts developing in the seating zone and stage areas.
